Transport platforms 2026: 5 providers for bulky goods compared head-to-head

Anyone moving bulky goods in Germany today has more options than just a few years ago. Classic forwarders, moving companies, rental-van self-pickup, and newer peer-to-peer platforms compete in the same market. Which solution fits which scenario?

Our editorial team observed five options over several months, rated them on publicly available data and customer feedback, and built a weighted ranking. The result is a subjective but transparently reasoned assessment.

Chapter 02 · Methodology

How we rated

The rating is based on seven criteria we consider relevant for bulky transports in Germany. Each criterion was rated 0 to 10, and the overall score is the weighted average.

Editorial note: Ratings are based on publicly available information (provider websites, terms, Trustpilot reviews, app store ratings) as well as our own hands-on impressions over several weeks. Data is updated when things change. Assessment date: May 2026.

  1. 01

    Which providers we compared

We picked the five options most commonly used in Germany for bulky transports. Local providers and niche solutions were not included.

  2. 02

    Criteria

Price, speed, insurance, GPS tracking, flexibility, sustainability, booking experience. Each criterion contributes differently to the final score.

  3. 03

Each criterion was rated 0 to 10, then weighted and summed. Price and insurance carry the highest weight (20% each), the others 12% each.

Chapter 03 · Detailed ratings

Detailed ratings

For each provider you find the full assessment with main strengths and weaknesses below.

Rank 1: MUVN

9.2 / 10

Peer-to-peer platform headquartered in Hamburg. Senders are matched with private drivers who have spare capacity on the route. Works particularly well for furniture and bulky single items in Germany.

Strengths

  • Up to 80% cheaper than classic forwarders
  • Automatic insurance up to 250 € per transport
  • Live GPS tracking and photo documentation in the app

Weaknesses

  • No guaranteed same-day delivery — typical range 1 to 5 days
  • Lower driver density on very rural routes
  • Not suitable for very fragile high-value items like pianos

Rank 2: Classic forwarder

7.8 / 10

Established logistics companies like DHL Bulky, Hermes Two-Man Handling, or DPD Bulky. Professionals with their own vehicle fleets and fixed delivery slots.

Strengths

  • Reliable, predictable delivery times of 1 to 3 days
  • Insurance and professional handling included as standard
  • Good coverage for international transports within DACH

Weaknesses

  • Usually 2 to 4 times more expensive than peer-to-peer solutions
  • Little flexibility for custom pickup or delivery slots
  • Booking process can be cumbersome for one-off bulky items

Rank 3: Moving company

7.2 / 10

Classic movers with full-service handling: packing, transport, assembly. Makes sense for large moves, less so for single items.

Strengths

  • Full-service offer with loading and unloading included
  • Professionals for assembly, dismantling, heavy items
  • Flexible dates, often weekends possible

Weaknesses

  • By far the most expensive option, often starting at several hundred euros
  • Overkill for single items, designed for full apartments
  • Often needs to be booked weeks in advance

Rank 4: Self-pickup with rental van

5.6 / 10

You rent a van and pick the item up yourself. Cheapest variant, by far the highest personal effort.

Strengths

  • Cheapest option for short distances
  • Full control over schedule and handling
  • No waiting for a match or driver

Weaknesses

  • High time and physical effort, often requires two people
  • Rental insurance usually does not cover the cargo
  • Fuel, tolls, and return windows can push the price up quickly

Rank 5: BlaBlaCar

3.1 / 10

BlaBlaCar is a rideshare platform for people, not for objects. It is still often searched for. We only include it here to make the boundary clear: it does not fit.

Strengths

  • Very well known brand, high user reach
  • Works well for person ridesharing
  • Fair prices for passenger transport

Weaknesses

  • Not designed for objects, no cargo insurance
  • No shipping or transport process, only passenger transport
  • If you are looking here, you are actually looking for MUVN

Voices from the field

Quotes from real user feedback, grouped by provider used. Source listed per quote.

Sofa from Berlin to Leipzig via MUVN — driver was friendly, everything went smoothly, and clearly cheaper than the forwarder I had quoted before.
Sabrina E.Furniture transport · Trustpilot
The forwarder was reliable and on time. But it cost 320 € for a route I later paid 80 € for on a P2P platform.
Markus K.Dresser transport · Google Reviews
Renting a van is cheap, sure. But a 7-hour round trip with a second person — I would never do that again.
Anna B.Self-pickup · Forum thread
I asked BlaBlaCar if someone could take my box along. Answer: 'We are for people only.' Makes sense, I guess.

Chapter 06 · FAQ

Common questions about this comparison

Answers to the questions we get most often about this comparison.

How were the five providers chosen?

We focused on the options most commonly used in Germany for bulky transports. Local providers, highly specialised forwarders, and pure B2B solutions are not in the comparison.

Which providers allow online booking without a consultation call?

Peer-to-peer platforms like MUVN and rental-van providers allow complete online booking in minutes. Classic forwarders and moving companies usually require an enquiry with an individual quote and a callback, which can stretch the booking process across several days.

Which option works for same-day delivery?

Same-day does not work reliably via any of the P2P solutions. For time-critical deliveries, express forwarders or courier services are the right choice. MUVN is optimised for 1 to 5 days.

What about high-value items like pianos or antiques?

For very fragile high-value items we recommend specialised moving companies with experience in this segment. MUVN works well for standard bulky goods, not for pianos or museum-grade pieces.

Why are the price differences so large?

Forwarders and moving companies maintain their own vehicle fleets and fixed routes, which costs money. P2P platforms use spare capacity on trips that are happening anyway, which lowers cost significantly. Self-pickup is cheapest because you take on all the effort yourself.
